LuraTech, based in Berlin, Germany, is one of the world's leading developers
of JPEG2000 implementations and technology for the compression of images
and scanned documents.
LuraTech's innovative compression software stems from ten years of research
in the area of wavelet-based data compression, based upon applied engineering
competence as well as close collaboration with universities and research
facilities.
LuraTech's goal is to lead the industry for data compression and document
imaging in the context of international standards. Its products have
consistently been at the forefront of image compression, and the CTO of
LuraTech leads the German delegation of the JPEG committee at the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In addition, the
company is credited with co-authoring JPEG2000/Part6 and handled all
compliance test-streams for JPEG2000/Part4.
With LuraWave and LuraDocument, LuraTech has developed two
high-performance compression options for digital images and for documents,
which are especially suited to the medical sector, geographic information or
digital archiving systems, and image data management.
LuraTech latest product is LuraDocument JPM, the first ever implementation
of the new ISO standard JPEG2000/Part6 (ISO 15444-6), the international
standard for what is called the 'multi-layer technique'. It currently leads
the color compression industry in being the only product based on open
standards that uses the multi-layer approach, essentially meaning that a
large color file can be split into layers and reduced to around 1% of its
original size, with almost no visible loss in quality.
With the brand new LuraDocument PDF Compressor and the LuraDocument PDF C-SDK,
scanned color documents can now also be saved as PDFs. This process
uses the segmentation and compression technology of LuraDocument JPM to create
highly-compressed files from color scans in PDF format with excellent image
quality. Important: The files can be opened without plug-ins or additional
software by conventional Acrobat Readers from version 6.0 on (or from version
5.0 in compatibility mode).
In addition to Fax G4 JBIG2 can be used for bilevel layer compression
in the latest version of LuraDocument JPM. Therewith for the first
time LuraTech offers a product for documents scanned black/white, because
compression with JBIG2 - even embedded in PDF - on the average performs
40% better than Fax G4. Color scans stored as JPM or JPM-style PDF are
reduced 30% in size by use of JBIG2.
In 2001, JPEG2000/Part1 (ISO 15444-1) was certified as a new world-wide
standard for image data compression. In the same year, LuraWave JP2,
LuraTech's innovative, easy-to-integrate JPEG2000/Part1 implementation, was
released, offering a significant efficiency increase over conventional image
formats such as JPEG and GIF. For lossless compression with JPEG2000, data
volumes are reduced two to three times compared to TIFF LZW. For lossy
compression, volumes are reduced two to three times when compared to JPEG.
As well as these two flagship products, the previously non-standardized LDF
version of LuraDocument now has a successor which conforms to open standards,
while still incorporating all the advantages that made it so popular.
LuraDocument is a procedure for the color archiving of scanned documents
that contain both text and image elements. Text, image and background
components are segmented and compressed separately, each with the optimal
algorithms. Color scans can therefore be saved in excellent image quality
with small file sizes. This high-performance compression technique for
mixed-raster content is especially suited for complex document management
and geo information systems where large volumes of scanned color documents
or maps must be archived, edited and sent on a daily basis.
Both LuraDocument and LuraWave are offered as software development
kits (SDKs) which enable developers of software and hardware to integrate
LuraTech's technology into their own products.
In addition to SDKs,
LuraTech offers command line tools, stand-alone applications, and plug-ins
for Office and all Internet browsers.
Customers who have already successfully implemented LuraTech's core products
LuraWave or LuraDocument include: Avision, Corel Corporation, Dürr
Dental, EADS, ESA, FujiFilm, IMAGE PRO, IXOS SOFTWARE, Kodak Medical, Minol,
Reprozentrum Rosenberger, Scanpoint sowie VITRONIC.
