Topics in this issue:
LuraTech now provides a single source for all ISO standard-compatible, long-term PDF/A archiving needs. To meet this need, we are offering LuraDocument PDF Compressor, LuraDocument PDF Printer and LuraDocument PDF Validator.
If you want to convert a digital document – from Word, Excel or another application – to a PDF/A file, you need a printer driver: The LuraDocument PDF Printer is suited for this, as it can be easily installed in every Windows application and accessed via an interface from that application. The conversion can be either client- or server-based. As a virtual printer, it can easily and securely convert Microsoft Office, CAD files and all other electronic documents to PDF/A-1b or PDF format 1.4 or 1.5.
In addition, the printer has various settings available, including orientation (portrait/landscape format), resolution, black and white/color mode and print quality of the graphics. As a result of the GDI printer driver, the files are quickly converted to the PDF/A format. The user can first define a target path where the files are to be stored. This happens automatically, so you don't need to enter the target path again.
The PDF/A format has a number of requirements for digital documents: For example, all fonts used must be completely embedded in the file. Outside dependencies or references to external sources that may impair long-term readability are excluded. Encryption is not permitted.
What happens if you receive externally-generated PDF/A files and want to know if they are really PDF/A-compatible before you archive them? In this case, you can make sure the document fulfills the required PDF/A parameters with LuraDocument PDF Validator. If the PDF/A document completely fulfills the ISO-certified regulations, the validator will allow electronic archiving. If it finds errors, it documents them in a report. LuraDocument PDF Validator has a “quick check” function that sorts out PDF files that may not be compatible at first sight. Then, only files that seem to be compatible, are subject to a more extensive check.
LuraDocument PDF Validator is available in two versions:
· Command Line Tool version: In this version, it can be integrated into a document management or archiving system which automatically checks all PDF/A files to be archived.
· Desktop version: With this version, the validating tool can check files for PDF/A compatibility at the user's workstation. For example, documentation created by suppliers in PDF/A format can be checked quickly.

OPTIMAL SYSTEMS GmbH and LuraTech Europe GmbH have agreed to collaboratively market the LuraDocument PDF compressor server. OPTIMAL SYSTEMS develops and markets software solutions for enterprise content management and is among the leading German providers of individually configurable solutions for digital archiving, documents and business process management.
OPTIMAL SYSTEMS uses LuraTech PDF/A technology in the new 5.50 version of its software suite for ECM. The optional module is available under the product name OS_PDF/A-dispatcher and includes all functions of the LuraDocument PDF Compressor Server. OS_PDF/A-dispatcher simultaneously converts and compresses conventional scan formats such as TIFF, JPEG, PDF and other documents to PDF/A-compatible files. The generated documents also offer full text search and can be provided with a digital signature.
"We've found LuraTech to be a competent partner and can now offer its solution for generating PDF/A-compatible documents to our customers,” said Sven Sauer, CIO at OPTIMAL SYSTEMS. “LuraTech Europe GmbH won us over with its high-capacity technology for compressing images, data and documents and its many years of experience in this area."
The OS_PDF/A-dispatcher was first introduced at the June 25-26, 2007, national user conference of the OPTIMAL SYSTEMS group in Berlin. There, Carsten Heiermann, managing director of LuraTech Europe GmbH, hosted a presentation on long-term archiving with PDF/A. "We found a lot of interest in PDF/A among users. Many companies, government agencies and organizations are now beginning to get involved with long-term digital archiving," Heiermann said. "We have gotten very positive feedback about the presentation and were able to show the advantages and benefits of PDF/A are to those attendees who still had doubts or lacked information."

At the American Library Association (ALA) exhibit and conference from June 21-27, 2007, in Washington, D.C., LuraTech Inc. and LexisNexis, a leading provider of information and services solutions, presented its new image compressing solution, LuraWave® JP2 Image Content Server (ICS). LexisNexis is using LuraWave JP2 Image Content Server (ICS) to both convert their digital, historic collections of more than 56,000 maps into the standard JPEG2000 image format and provide web-based viewing features for the maps without any barriers, additional software or browser plug-ins. ICS offers several advanced web-based viewing features that allow end users to easily pan and zoom.
LexisNexis chose the ICS because of the open API which gives them the flexibility to connect to their existing systems and databases, create their own workflow processes and run the application across multiple machines.
