Image compression software from Berlin for the oldest photo archive in the world.
Algo Vision LuraTech and Alinari co-operation using JPEG2000
A leading developer of JPEG2000 implementations
and technology for the compression of images and documents, Berlin-based
company Algo Vision LuraTech GmbH has created high-performance compression
software for digital images with LuraWave.jp2. By compressing the image data
in the JPEG2000 standard, significantly smaller file sizes can be achieved
without a loss in image quality. In a pilot project, the Italian company
Fratelli Alinari, which owns the oldest photographic archive in the world,
will put LuraWave.jp2 through its paces as it uses the software to digitize
a set of images from its unique collection.
LuraWave.jp2 from Algo Vision LuraTech is an innovative JPEG2000
implementation that offers stability while being easy to integrate. The
JPEG2000 image format uses wavelet technology for greater compression of
image data to create even smaller files. At the same time, a far better
image quality can be offered than with conventional formats such as JPEG or
GIF. With LuraWave.jp2, for example, a high resolution image of 10MB can be
compressed to 100KB without any significant quality loss. The high level of
compression does not just enable fast data transfer, the space required for
archiving the image is of course also dramatically reduced. Therefore, the
software is especially suited to modern internet-based graphic and database
applications, e.g. in the medical sector, as well as for complex digital
archiving systems. Adobe has already integrated JPEG2000 functionality into
its latest version of Photoshop, the standard software for professional
image editing. As a result, JPEG2000 is sure to establish itself among all
users in the areas of image editing, data compression and image archiving.
Fratelli Alinari, founded in Florence in 1852, is a museum, archive and
library all in one. The Italian company has the largest photographic archive
in the world with over 3,500,000 photos of paintings, book illustrations,
portraits as well as sculptures and architectural works. 220,000 digital
images are already available online from www.business.alinari.it. Indexed in
a bilingual database, these can be used and published by journalists, press
agencies, graphic design studios and architects. In addition, an educational
bilingual online photo library (www.edu.alinari.it) provides scientists with
over 75,000 photos of works of art, which have been selected by experts for
study purposes in universities and by professors.
With such a huge amount of data, it’s hardly surprising that Alinari was
looking for a compression solution that could optimize the image loading and
data transfer times for the internet. Now, in a test project, the Italian
company is going to evaluate the use of LuraWave.jp2 for its vast image
archive.
"We have one of the largest digital photo archives in the world, enriched
recently by the collections of Roger Violet (France), Interfoto (Germany)
and Corbis (US). Many images are available on the internet so they can be
used by professionals and students anywhere in the world. Therefore it is
vital that the photos are of excellent quality while also having the small
size to ensure fast data transfer and short loading times in the internet.
With Algo Vision LuraTech we have found a professional partner in the area
of image data compression and look forward to the results of the test
project," comments Andrea de Polo, head of the New Technologies Office at
Fratelli Alinari.
"JPEG2000 has been a recognized ISO standard for two years and is becoming
a state-of-the-art image format. Algo Vision LuraTech lets Alinari benefit
from the numerous advantages of LuraWave.jp2. These are, for example,
excellent image quality with small data sizes, lower storage space
requirements, faster transmission and lower data transfer costs," remarks
Carsten Heiermann, Managing Director of Algo Vision LuraTech.
