BETA test program for new ISO standard:
Participants still being sought: The JPEG2000 company Algo Vision LuraTech initiates BETA testing for its compression software LuraDocument.jpm.
From July 1 to 23, 2003, Algo Vision LuraTech, a leading developer of
compression technology for images and documents as well as JPEG2000
implementations, will conduct a comprehensive BETA program for
LuraDocument.jpm. With this new LuraDocument version, the company offers
the first implementation worldwide based on the new ISO standard
JPEG2000/Part 6 for documents which contain both image elements and text
(mixed raster content, MRC). The test phase will not only guarantee
maximum product quality but also generate feedback from potential
customers before the actual market introduction. Further test participants
are welcome.
Begin of the BETA phase
The powerful compression technology LuraDocument.jpm is particularly suited
for maximum-compressed yet simultaneous high-quality archiving of scanned
color documents of mixed raster content. An efficient MRC compression is of
special interest to Document Management (DMS) and Geo-Information System
(GIS) vendors and customers who need to manage and archive large amounts of
scan-ned business documents or maps. Algo Vision LuraTech is therefore
especially pleased to welcome further participants from the DMS and GIS
sectors. Of course, participation in the test is free of charge. What is
more, it offers those taking part a significant competitive advantage.
Namely, technical information on LuraDocument.jpm and JPEG2000/Part6 will
be delivered by Algo Vision LuraTech before the official LuraDocument.jpm
release - only to participants involved in the BETA program.
As a means of saying thank you, Algo Vision LuraTech will offer test
participants the Software Developer Kit at a one time price of 1,990 EUR
instead of 3,250 EUR upon the conclusion of the BETA phase. In addition,
participants will receive full technical support from Algo Vision LuraTech
in the implementation of LuraDocument.jpm for their application needs.
High performance compression in the new ISO standard
With LuraDocument.jpm, the previously non-standardized LDF format finally
receives its first standard conform successor. Naturally, the new format
also offers the well-known advantages in terms of performance and compressed
file size. LuraDocument.jpm is a highly professional procedure for the color
archiving of scanned documents with bitonal elements. Originals are scanned
in high-resolution and then compressed in JPEG2000/Part6 format. Decisive
hereby is that despite the reduction of data size, a marked increase in
image quality is obtained over conventional formats such as GIF or JPEG.
This is made possible through the use of wavelet transformation (a special
mathematical procedure for the compression of image data).

Illustration: Multi-layer technique, © Algo Vision LuraTech GmbH
With the multi-layer compression technique, text, image and background
components are segmented and compressed separately, each with the optimal
algorithms. The bitonal layer (see illustration: middle layer) contains the
text components of the document and is stored losslessly as a black/white
image in the standard Fax Group 4 format. This guarantees highest image
quality for the text segment and also provides the optimal conditions for
OCR recognition afterwards. The foreground layer (see illustration: top
layer) contains the text colors, while the background layer (see
illustration: bottom layer) holds all image elements. Unlike the previous
LDF version, however, these two segments are compressed using the ISO
standard JPEG2000/Part 1 instead of LuraWave. This innovative combination
of losslessly compressed text layer and JPEG2000 compression for foreground
and background layers provides an excellent visual quality along with an
extremely small file size. Compression rates of 1:100 to 1:500 are not
uncommon with LuraDocument.jpm.
Dates for the JPM market introduction
The BETA version of LuraDocument.jpm C-SDK for Windows will be made available
to all participants in the test phase from July 1, 2003. The official release
date of the product is scheduled for August 1, 2003. This coincides with the
release date for the viewer LuraDocument.jpm ActiveX Control for Internet
Explorer. August will also see the release of the LuraDocument.jpm Command
Line Tool for batch processing and LuraDocument.jpm Capture as a stand-alone
tool. These will be followed by further software implementations and system
support solutions.
