LuraDocument.jpm goes PDF!
ISO standard JPEG2000/Part6 now also available for the digital archiving of color documents in PDF format.
Algo Vision LuraTech, a leading developer of compression solutions for digital
images and documents as well as JPEG2000 implementations, introduces the brand
new server tool LuraDocument.jpm PdfCompressor. It enables the storage of highly
compressed files in PDF format without loss to image quality, representing an
answer by the Berlin software specialists to the growing user demand for a
conversion software which can create PDF files with the excellent results known
from JPEG2000/Part6.
In August 2003, just a few weeks after the official adoption of JPM as a new
JPEG2000/Part6 ISO standard for the compression of digitalized image data, Algo
Vision LuraTech launched the first ISO-compliant LuraDocument version,
LuraDocument.jpm. With this innovative tool, the company delivered not only the
first implementation worldwide of the new JPEG2000/Part6 ISO standard, but also
the first standard-conforming successor to its proven compression software for
color scanned documents, LuraDocument® 4.0.
"Already during the BETA phase, the independent test participants were very
enthusiastic. Like them, many users had been waiting for a standardized
LuraDocument version. In particular, quality, compression rate and performance
were judged to be very good, similar to the previous version. We are especially
pleased that many developers of document management systems have integrated the
JPM format into their software applications," comments Carsten Heiermann,
Managing Director of Algo Vision LuraTech.
Luradocument.jpm for PDFs
During the first month after market introduction, document output in JPM format
became possible with LuraDocument.jpm. With the brand new LuraDocument.jpm
PdfCompressor, scanned color documents can now also be saved in PDF format.
As this process uses the same segmentation technology as LuraDocument.jpm, for
the first time PDF files can be created with the excellent compression results
already known from JPEG2000/Part6. With the PdfCompressor, individual files,
directories or even directory trees can be searched either manually or
automatically for TIFFs. The located files are converted by the PdfCompressor
after compression into PDF format. It then saves the new files either alongside
the original or in a folder specified by the user. This process runs
automatically in the background while the user is working. Afterwards, the files
can be conveniently opened without additional plug-ins or software by
conventional Acrobat Readers from version 6.0 on (or from version 5.0 in
compatibility mode). What’s more, the LuraDocument.jpm C-SDK PDF AddOn enables
C-SDK system integrators to save highly compressed color scans in PDF format,
in addition to creating JPM files.
Application areas of the LuraDocument.jpm and LuraDocument.jpm PDF solutions
LuraDocument.jpm achieves the best compression results currently known for the
color archiving of scanned documents with mixed raster content. The tool is
particularly recommended for professional applications with closed user groups,
who can best benefit from the enormous performance spectrum of LuraDocument, for
example in DMS or GIS areas. Also, users who treat individual layers or process
these further are well-suited by JPM. This is because following compression with
LuraDocument.jpm, the background can be masked, so that only the black/white
text layer remains visible. The high image quality of the text segment is also
the best prerequisite for subsequent OCR processes.
On the other hand, the brand new Luradocument.jpm PDF solutions are perfectly
suited for working areas in which the PDF format is widely used, e.g. for
internet solutions or when files must be exchanged frequently or sent via
e-mail. The PdfCompressor is ideal for the multi-level document imaging workflow
or work groups in which large quantities of scans must be compressed.
