LuraTech PDF Compressor 2.2 Turns Scanned Documents into World's Most Compact PDF Files
Industry-Leading JPEG2000/Part6 Technology Offers Up To 99 Percent Storage Savings Combined With Perfect Image Quality
Redwood City, Calif. - LuraTech, the leader in open standard image compression,
announced a new version of LuraDocument PDF Compressor that turns scanned
documents into the world's most compact PDF Files. It can compress either
scanned documents or existing PDFs by up to 99 percent, with massive storage
cost savings as well as total compatibility with standard PDF readers.
Based on the JPEG2000/Part6 standard, co-authored by LuraTech and Xerox,
LuraDocument PDF Compressor Version 2.2 offers compression ratios of up to
300:1, while maintaining visually perfect image quality. The resulting files
are high-quality but also ultra-compact, as well as being readable on any
personal computer around the world, using a standard PDF reader without the
need for any plug-ins.
"Our LuraDocument PDF Compressor offers a quantum leap in document storage.
Companies with large numbers of documents can immediately slash their storage
costs, while simultaneously moving their document collections into a
high-quality color PDF format that any PC user worldwide can read," said
Carsten Heiermann, CEO of LuraTech.
Thanks to the industry-leading compression offered by LuraDocument PDF
Compressor, organizations can store documents in color using only the storage
space required by a black and white document: around 50 KB per page. Research
has shown that workers using color documents register a 14 percent increase in
comprehension, a 70 percent increase in decision-making speed and an 80 percent
improvement in reader accuracy, compared to working in black and white. These
improvements mean very significant cost savings from LuraDocument PDF Compressor
for any organization processing large numbers of documents.
LuraTech's competitive advantage comes from JPEG2000/Part6, which intelligently
separates text from graphics and applies different compression techniques to
each component for maximum compression and image quality. This results in sharp
text - typically black-and-white - and ultra-compact color graphics, compressed
respectively with LuraTech's industry-leading JBIG2 implementation and its
top-ranked JPEG2000 technology.
"We're talking here about a final file size of around 50 KB per
letter-sized color page, representing a dramatic savings in storage costs,"
added Heiermann. "Imagine being able to immediately reduce your document
storage requirements and costs by 90 percent - that's what LuraDocument PDF
Compressor 2.2 can do."
Scanning service providers also benefit from the latest version of LuraDocument
PDF Compressor with the ability to create several folders with individual
profiles - thereby implementing customer and application-specific job settings.
LuraDocument PDF Compressor can also be used to create new PDF meta-tags such as
"Company" or "Author" as well as useful information such as
time stamps.
Another benefit of PDF Compressor 2.2 is the ability to make large archived
files small enough to email comfortably. Many users, particularly librarians and
archivists, use the new JPEG2000 format in lossless mode to create a 'digital
master' as a storage format for long-term archiving. This large, but lossless,
original can then be easily transformed into a PDF using PDF Compressor 2.2,
making it smaller, more flexible and convenient enough to be sent via email or
posted to a Web site.
For example, the Japanese National Archive scans a wide range of map sizes and
converts the scans into large JP2 lossless files to create a digital master.
With the LuraDocument PDF Compressor, these same maps can be reduced in size
from over 5 yards square to letter size for remote viewing, with the file size
decreased from 3 gigabytes to just 300 kilobytes.
Version 2.2 of LuraDocument PDF Compressor offers greater flexibility, with two
new versions designed specifically for medium and large volume operations. The
server version is ideal for high volume environments, automatically monitoring
input directories, and compressing and filing documents in pre-defined output
directories. The product operates as a Windows-based service and can be used in
workgroup settings, as well as in conventional capture processes. The medium
version offers the same extensive functionality as the server version, but is
designed for moderate levels of document scanning. It offers a single license
for PDF conversion of up to 20,000 pages. LuraTech will continue to offer the
popular, basic desktop version for distributed scanning processes.
As a limited introductory promotion, LuraTech is offering a 20 percent discount
on the new high-volume server version of the product. Existing PDF Compressor
users receive a free upgrade to Version 2.2 as part of their support and
maintenance agreement.
