LuraTech workshops provide information on PDF/A and other formats for archiving

(Berlin) LuraTech GmbH in Berlin, renowned for its file format expertise, now offers custom workshops for companies and organizations interested in learning about archiving formats for scanned documents. Particular emphasis is placed on PDF/A, which the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved as the standard for long-term archiving. Participants in the workshops get an overview of the formats available for archiving as well as of the advantages and disadvantages of each. LuraTech has designed its workshop offerings to meet the high requirements for information and training in the area of long-term archiving.

Carsten Heiermann, managing director of LuraTech GmbH, commented with regard to the decision of the ISO committee, "We explicitly welcome the decision of the ISO committee to recognize PDF/A as a standard for long-term archiving. This provides assurance to companies that documents archived in this format will maintain their appearance and accessibility regardless of which applications and systems were used to create them." He added, "In the near future, we will expand our LuraDocument PDF products to include PDF/A. This will enable customers to take their scanned documents and existing PDFs, which can already be converted to highly compressed, full text searchable PDFs, and convert them to the PDF/A standard."
DMS/ECM Experts predict that the selection of PDF/A as a standard by ISO will promote the popularity of that format, and advantages such as full text search options will cause it to replace TIFF in the near future.

LuraTech GmbH has been intensively involved with file formats and compression standards since the company was founded a decade ago. The considerable expertise accumulated in this time is now offered in individual workshops on the many archiving formats in use. PDF/A is a central topic. In addition to that, the workshops provide an introduction to other standards and formats, such as JPEG2000, JPEG2000/Part6, conventional PDF, highly compressed PDF, PDF/X and JBIG2. These formats are compared and ranked based on application examples.
Thomas Zellmann, Sales Manager for LuraTech GmbH remarked, "There continues to be a strong need for education on the subject of archiving formats. This was made clear, for example, by the number of people who attended the panel discussion on this subject in the VOI forum at the DMS EXPO. Our many years of experience in this area and contributions to ISO standards have given us a wealth of basic knowledge, which we would like to share with those interested."

Mr. Zellmann will also make a general presentation on archiving formats in the DMS forum at Systems 2005 (Hall A2, Stand 120). It will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 from 11:00 to 11:25 am.
