An end to the 'format zoo' in electronic archives:
PDF/A documents are available now using LuraTech products
(Berlin) LuraTech is among the first providers to announce the availability of
its complete range of PDF/A-compatible products. Version 4 of the new PDF
Compressor transforms scanned documents into highly compressed, full (OCR) text
searchable PDF/A documents that can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader version
5.0 or later. With the new LuraDocument JPM/PDF Kodak CS Exporter, users of
Kodak Capture Software can compress digitized documents and save them in PDF/A
format. The PDF software development kit (SDK) enables software developers to
integrate compression functionality, for example in input management or document
management systems.
PDF has been one of the most widespread document formats for a long time.
Compared with image formats such as TIFF, it is much smaller and capable of
being full text searched. Now the ISO standard of PDF/A for long-term archiving
further ensures that the documents will remain readable in the long-term. Thus
PDF/A meets all the requirements to establish itself as a uniform format for
incoming and outgoing documents and for black and white or color documents with
bitmaps or other graphics and text content. Compared to the conventional TIFF
format, PDF/A is clearly superior due to factors such as full text capabilities,
color fidelity and lower file size. Consequently PDF/A has the potential to
facilitate long-term unification of the many formats, a virtual 'zoo', often
found in electronic archives today.
The products from the compression specialist LuraTech provide the first
solutions available on the market to support the implementation of a long-term
archive for scanned documents using the PDF/A format. The compressed documents
are fully OCR-text searchable and can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader
version 5.0 or later.
Initial projects already in progress
LuraTech presented its first product releases with PDF/A capabilities at this
year's CeBIT and encountered considerable interest among the trade show visitors.
'PDF/A is currently the hot topic for archiving formats, and we are pleased to
be among the first to provide customers with truly mature products to meet this
demand,' commented Carsten Heiermann, managing director of LuraTech Europe GmbH.
Scanpoint, a provider of document scanning services, will integrate the new
software development kit with PDF/A in its TIFFCapture data entry solution.
'Furthermore,' continued Mr. Heiermann, 'We already have numerous specific
project inquiries from innovative users evaluating the use of PDF/A, such as the
central savings bank for Hesse and Thuringia (Helaba), the city of Erlangen or
the WWK insurance group in Germany.'
In addition to applying its competence with PDF/A to the development of its own
products for scanned documents, LuraTech also shares its expertise with digital
and scanned PDF documents in collaboration with the Swiss PDF Tools AG in the
PDF/A competence center (www.luratech.com/pdfa). Here interested parties can
find comprehensive support for all questions and challenges involving PDF/A.
Recently the competence center was joined by Zöller & Partner GmbH, a well-known
technology and management consulting organization specializing in DMS/ECM
applications.
The Desktop PDF Compressor: introductory version available for downloading
Interested parties can download a limited "desktop" version of the PDF
Compressor at www.luratech.com/download/pdf and simply test the conversion to
PDF/A format. The desktop version uses the same compression engine as the server
version without OCR, but it is intended for occasional manual conversions, such
as would be occur for digital archiving of documents in small and medium-sized
companies. It is also useful for decentralized creation of highly compressed
PDFs, for example by field personnel, branch or regional offices and departments.
