Is PDF/A the key to long-term archiving?

PDF/A guarantees that documents are archived in a format that will preserve their availability and readability – no matter what program or system was originally used to create them.

PDF/A is an ISO standard for long-term archiving of digital documents. Rather than defining an archiving strategy, it specifies a format for digital documents which will ensure that documents remain reproducible for years into the future. The PDF/A format preserves the visual appearance of a digital document, no matter what program or system was originally used to create or save it.

PDF/A is based on the Portable Document Format technology developed by Adobe Systems Inc., but it removes those functions which are not suited to long-term archiving. These include audio and video elements and transparent objects. An essential component for a PDF/A file’s reproducibility is that the document is 100% self-contained. These requirements ensure that the information needed to precisely reproduce the document every time is embedded within the file itself. This means that every PDF/A file contains all the content it needs, including text, raster images, vector graphics, fonts and color information.

fold faq

What are PDF/A’s technical specifications?

The PDF/A standard is divided up into three tiered “parts”: PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3. These correspond to ISO standards:

The latter two contain additions to the original standard, meaning that any document which has ever been PDF/A-compliant will remain valid.
As well as the three different editions of the standard, there are three so-called "conformance levels" known as levels "A", "B" and "U".

  • A stands for "accessible", indicating that specific additional information is embedded which would allow visually impaired users, for example, to access the document using a screen reader.
  • B stands for "basic", indicating that all technical requirements of the PDF/A standard regarding document format and unambiguous visual reproducibility have been fulfilled.
  • U stands for "Unicode". This level was introduced with PDF/A-2; it indicates that all text within the document is encoded according to the Unicode system. This is useful to ensure characters are correctly displayed anywhere in the world; for example, all Asian characters will be clearly encoded in this format.

Unless more specific requirements are given, it is usually recommended that documents are created in PDF/A-2U format.

fold faq

What is PDF?

PDF stands for “Portable Document Format”. The advantage of the PDF format is that formatted documents can be sent to other users who will see the document on-screen or in print exactly as it was originally designed – no matter what hardware or operating system is used.

fold faq

Is PDF/A the same as PDF?

In principle, any valid PDF/A document is also a valid PDF document, which means any modern PDF viewer can open and display it. That said, the two formats are not identical.

Although PDF/A is based on the PDF format, this ISO standard was designed for long-term archiving of digital documents. The visual appearance of a digital document is preserved no matter what tools or systems were originally used to create or save it. Rather than defining an archiving strategy or the goals of an archiving system, the PDF/A standard is a “profile” for digital documents to ensure they will remain reproducible for years to come.

fold faq

How can I get a license for the PDF Compressor Enterprise?

After purchasing a license, please create a License Request within the PDF Compressor under File -> Options and send it by email to supportluratech.com. We’ll send you a license file immediately.

fold faq

How can I transfer the PDF Compressor software to a new computer?

To transfer a license to another computer, we must first deactivate the existing installation. Please start by sending us an email with an attached license request generated on the “old” machine. The same applies when completely reinstalling the operating system on the same computer.

fold faq

What compression level can your software achieve?

Our solutions provide the perfect balance between compression ratio, image quality and performance of any product currently available on the market. The compression ratio depends on the file to be processed (TIFF or pre-compressed JPG) and whether you need a lossless or lossy output document. You can use our free demo version to test our compression system on some of your own documents. Our support team will also help you find the right settings to meet your needs.

fold faq

Why should I archive documents with PDF/A?

1. Long-term access guaranteed
PDF/A files are designed to enable access no matter what platforms, technologies or developers are used. This guarantees that documents will remain accessible for long periods of time without requiring proprietary technology.

2. PDF/A is a standard data format
PDF/A is based on the well-known PDF standard, as well as being an ISO standard itself. This guarantees long-term availability and easy access to content stored in this format.

3. Optimal information storage
PDF/A allows metadata storage, file classification using metadata, and full text searching across the entire archive.

4. Compression for small file sizes
PDF/A allows you to compress files down to a fraction of their original size without affecting a document’s quality. Smaller files mean reduced storage requirements and easier transfer via FTP, email and more.

fold faq

What is JPEG 2000?

JPEG 2000 is a wavelet-based compression standard used for either lossless or lossy compression of digital images. This format usually makes for a better relationship between quality and file size than with the older TIFF and JPEG formats.

fold faq

What JPEG 2000 products does LuraTech offer?

We offer a range of products, including SDKs in the form of source code or binary distributions for a wide range of system environments, as well was conversion and command line tools to integrate into your workflow. The LuraTech® JP2 Image Content Server is ideal for large-scale digital archiving projects.

fold faq

What platforms do your SDKs support? Do you support Win64?

Our SDKs are available in 32- and 64-bit versions for Windows, Linux and Solaris. Compatible versions for other platforms can be made available on request.

Kategorie: General, JBIG2 SDK - EN
fold faq

How fast are your SDKs compared with other JPEG 2000 implementations?

We offer one of the fastest SDKs currently available on the market. Speed is undoubtedly a critical factor, but image quality and compression ratios should also be taken into account. As these factors are all interdependent, we believe we offer the best possible balance between speed, superior image quality and high compression ratios.

fold faq

Is any special software required to view JPEG 2000 files?

That depends on how you plan to use the product. To avoid installing additional software, you can use the LuraTech JP2 Image Content Server for web-capable JPEG 2000 image display. It converts images "on the fly" to JPEG format. If you are developing your own image display application, you can use any JPEG 2000 decoder to display JPEG 2000 images.

fold faq

How much does the software cost?

Our competitive pricing model takes several factors into account when determining costs. Is the product being implemented within a larger application which will be marketed to others? Or do you want to integrate our software into your own business workflow? You will also need to take into account how intensively you want to use the software. Our sales team will gladly help you work out a plan for maximum cost-efficiency.

fold faq

What is a runtime license?

Development licenses regulate how our SDKs can be used to develop other solutions. Runtime licenses, in contrast, are based on how our components are actually used as part of a solution developed by you.
For example, if you want to equip workstations in a medical laboratory with software which can display JPEG 2000-encoded images, a single computer may be enough for developing the software. You will need a runtime license, however, for every laboratory computer using the software after development is complete.

fold faq

What component parts make up a ZUGFeRD invoice?

A ZUGFeRD invoice is made up of a visual depiction of an invoice, which is displayed within a PDF/A-3 file, and a copy of the invoice information as a structured, machine-readable data set. This is stored within an XML file which is then embedded into the PDF/A-3 file as an attachment.

fold faq

Is PDF/A, the foundation of ZUGFeRD, a developer-specific format?

No. The ZUGFeRD format used PDF/A-3. PDF/A was published as an ISO standard in 2005, which means that the format is based on an international, universally-visible, public standard – it is completely independent of any single developer. The first version of PDF/A was published in 2005, while ZUGFeRD uses the PDF/A-3 standard which past published by the ISO in October 2012 as standard 19005-3:2012.

PDF/A has been specially developed for long-term storage. This means PDF/A ensures that the visual representation will remain accessible for as long as it is needed. The requirements that define PDF/A also ensure a technically high-quality PDF file is produced.

ZUGFeRD is also based on other open standards such as XML (from the W3C), Core Industry Invoices and Message User Guidelines.

fold faq

Does a ZUGFeRD invoice always require both a PDF and an XML file? Or would an XML file alone also be ZUGFeRD-compliant?

A ZUGFeRD invoice always consists of a PDF/A-3 file with an embedded XML file inside it. Users should be able to view the invoice without any extra help or complex display tools – particularly if they are not personally interested in processing the structured data. Embedding XML data within the PDF/A-3 file also ensures a clear relationship between the image and the structured data.

fold faq

Can the ZUGFeRD Release Candidate be used to productively exchange ZUGFeRD-format invoices?

Yes, the release candidate fully describes a ZUGFeRD invoice. This means the format can be used for practical purposes. However, not all documentation for the ZUGFeRD Release Candidate has been published yet. This documentation is a work in progress and, when finished, will be released together with the Release Candidate for further public consultation. The result of the public consultation should then be the publication of a new version of the ZUGFeRD format.
