At the AIIM International Exposition and Conference (Booth 344), March 30-April 2, 2009, in Philadelphia, LuraTech will demonstrate its LuraDocument® PDF Compressor solution and an improved Form Recognition Module that has been expanded to include free-form recognition. These new capabilities enable users to eliminate many manual processes, including pre-sorting, and supports streamlined conversion of complex, multi-page documents.
The addition of an integrated free-form recognition tool makes PDF Compressor an all-in-one product for processing incoming documents. The software now includes all the functions necessary to cover the entire sequence from scanner output to export for long-term archiving, including classifying and reading documents, compression, conversion to PDF and PDF/A, full text OCR and electronic signature integration.
How Free-Form Recognition Works
With free-form recognition capabilities, specific data – even if it appears in different places on the page from document to document – can be recognized and extracted, supporting automatic classification of semi-structured documents. By including free-form recognition in the Form Recognition Module, the PDF Compressor can identify and sort a wide variety of documents, such as invoices, read and extract the appropriate information from the documents and then prepare this information for input into other applications, such as merchandise management or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
With this upgrade to the Form Recognition Module, LuraTech is moving beyond a solely template-based approach. The PDF Compressor with optional Form Recognition Module provides numerous new features, including the ability to:
The Form Recognition Module, including free-form recognition capabilities, can be purchased as an optional feature for the PDF Compressor. For more information, please visit www.LuraTech.com. To read the full press release, click here.

LuraTech announced that the Koninklijke Bibliotheek – the Dutch National Library – has chosen the LuraWave JP2 Image Content Server as a key component in a comprehensive digitization project. By 2011, the library expects to transfer almost 44 million pages – primarily newspapers and historic books – to a sustainable electronic archive. Moving from the use of uncompressed TIFF to JPEG2000, Koninklijke Bibliotheek is pioneering a new archiving strategy in Europe. LuraTech’s Image Content Server will enable the library to produce high-quality compressed JPEG2000 reproductions and make them easily available on the Web.
“Around the world, archives and libraries are faced with the challenge of having to archive their historical collections in a lossless manner as ‘digital masters,’" said Thomas Zellmann, a LuraTech Europe GmbH executive. "Using JPEG2000 instead of uncompressed TIFF reduces storage costs and enables these organizations to make their historic documents available as digitized, highly compressed data on their own Web portals or as part of larger Internet libraries."
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag, The Netherlands, has a rich tradition as the national library since 1798. It is one of the largest and most modern libraries in Europe, and is home to a competence center for digitization and archiving that serves as a role model for libraries around the world.
The move to JPEG2000 follows a decision by the research and development department of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek that the TIFF format would not be appropriate for long-term archiving, because that format would require about 650 TB of storage space for 44 million pages and cost the library millions annually for maintenance. In evaluating all the alternatives, the library determined that compression using JPEG 2000 would be the best in terms of required storage capacity, image quality, longevity and functionality.
By using LuraTech’s JPEG2000-based LuraWave JP2 Image Content Server, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek can present its comprehensive digitization projects conveniently. The LuraWave software designed for archives and libraries that wish to display the content of scanned books and manuscripts quickly and efficiently on the Internet. It enables organizations to convert, store, manage and deliver digital images and content over any browser-based viewing application.
The LuraWave JP2 Image Content Server offers libraries andtheir users a number of advantages, including:
Groundbreaking recommendation
With its recommendation of the JPEG2000 standard (ISO 15444) for image compression, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek has taken an important step for promoting the standard, especially for archives and libraries. JPEG2000 makes it possible to compress color documents while maintaining legibility, as well as the visual quality and color characteristics of the image areas, and resolves storage problems associated with digitized, high-resolution color documents.
"According to our own investigations, our decision to use JPEG2000 is the best option to continue to meet our responsibility as a national library in the best way possible,” said Astrid Verheusen, a project manager in the library's R&D department. “This enables us to maintain the material we store over the long term, expand it and make it available to a wide public."
