LuraTech Delivers Smarter PDFs with Enhancements to PDF Compressor

LuraTech has upgraded its LuraDocument® PDF Compressorwith features that improve search capabilities and result in richer, more intelligent PDF files. In the latest version of PDF Compressor, users will be able to embed XMP metadata, links and bookmarks, as well as XML OCR results.

“It’s all about the metadata. The new version of PDF Compressor allows you to turn PDFs into complete records by allowing you to embed descriptive metadata,” said Mark McKinney, LuraTech’s president. “By embedding this information, you will be able to create more useful PDF documents that preserve all of the content that is vital to the integrity of your records.”

These latest enhancements are designed to create more robust files for record managers, digital archivists and others who need to find and access information in their digital files. By embedding XMP metadata, LuraTech delivers improved search capabilities and retains links within and between documents. The inclusion of links and bookmarks further expand the usefulness of the PDF files.

Also with this release, the PDF Compressor can output to PDF/A-1a, a higher level of PDF/A compliancy. It also supports embedding of ABBYY XML OCR, enabling users to include hidden text from different sources.

PDF/A Becomes More Prominent in United States

Many organizations and nearly all electronic archiving projects in Europe use PDF/A for document preservation. Now many in North America are following suit. Adoption of this long-term archiving format is building momentum because it takes advantage of the powerful yet ubiquitous nature of PDF and backs it with a well supported ISO standard.

For example, two major federal government agencies, the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), have acknowledged their ability to accept PDF/A files as long as the documents meet their electronic submittal requirements.http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/initiatives/pdf-faq.html

Several state and local governments around the country have adopted PDF/A to guarantee their documents will be accessible via long-term digital archives. For example, two New York State agencies – the Education Department and Office of Mental Health – capture scanned records as PDF/A to minimize storage requirements while ensuring access to their records.http://www.luratech.com/company/case-studies/overcoming-data-overload.html

Also, firms in the biotech industry – such as LABTrack and Genentec – are relying on PDF/A to archive research material and lab notebooks. Genentec scans lab notebooks in full color, compresses and saves to PDF/A to guarantee long-term access while preserving the readability of handwriting. And LABTrack software allows researchers to save their electronic lab notebooks to PDF/A to preserve their findings.

In Europe, the APO-Bank of Germany, the Schweizer National Bank of Switzerland and many more are already implementing PDF/A. Now banks and insurance companies in the US and Canada are expressing a growing interest in the standard format.

The legal industry is also showing an increased interest in the format and is expected to move from TIFF to PDF/A in the coming year as the US SEC updates their regulations.

The Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM), the leading non-profit organization focused on records management education, research and best practices for optimizing information, is supporting this adoption by endorsing PDF/A and offering different classesand webinars on the subject.

The increasing interest in PDF/A has resulted in the PDF/A Competence Center establishing a North American chapterin April 2009. The North American chapter of this international organization, which promotes the exchange of information in the field of long-term archiving using the PDF/A standard, will host a series of PDF/A seminars with AIIM in the Fall of 2009, with the first to be held in Chicago , Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. (Exact dates coming soon.)

Webinar: PDF/A for Born Digital Documents

Learn about Born Digital to PDF/A Option for Long-Term Archiving on June 24

Would you like to learn more about the practical benefits of converting electronically created content to PDF/A using the new Born Digital to PDF/A option for the LuraDocument PDF Compressor?

Join LuraTech President Mark McKinney for the latest in our series of webinars, where here will review the fundamental elements of PDF/A and demonstrate best practices for converting digital documents – such as Microsoft Office, Outlook e-mail and PDFs – to the long-term archiving standard.

The Born Digital to PDF/A option is an easy to implement solution that gives records and operation managers a cost-effective way to batch process electronically created files in the same way that they process scanned documents with the PDF Compressor.

During this webinar, participants will:

  • Receive a brief overview of core features behind PDF/A,
  • Learn how to batch process born digital documents into PDF/A, and
