12 August 2008: During the Nuclear Information and Records Management Association (NIRMA) meeting in Las Vegas, NV, Darren Ash, Deputy Executive Director for Corporate Management and Chief Information Officer of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) made an announcement during the Tuesday morning breakfast:
The NRC can accept electronic filings in the PDF/A format.
The NRC requires that organizations submit regulatory filing PDF's that adhere to strict Preflight guidelines before they can be accepted. However, it had not been clear whether the NRC also could accept electronic documents that comply with the PDF/A standard.
Ash's announcement at NIRMA this year made their intention clear: PDF/A is an accepted standard for the NRC. By adapting, the NRC will be making it easier for nuclear companies to meet their long-term access and archiving requirements while adhering to regulatory submittal processes.
LuraTech also enjoyed the opportunity to participate in this year's conference. Thank you to the NIRMA organizers and all who attended the two-part, interactive session, "Life of the Plant: Effective Use of PDF/A" and the panel discussion "Electronic Documents - Persistence or Preservation?" hosted by Eugene Yang, Principal Consultant, KISMET Consulting, Inc. The active discussion with all of the participants was greatly appreciated.
We look forward to continuing the conversation on the PDF/A standard. Click here to send us your questions!
