PDF/A

PDF/A for ISO compliant long-term archiving

In fall 2005, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) designated PDF/A as a standard for long-term archiving. This standard provides assurance to companies and public agencies that documents archived in PDF/A format will maintain their appearance and accessibility regardless of which applications and systems were used to create them.

PDF/A is the ISO 19005-1 standard for long-term archiving, based on PDF format. It defines a specific profile for using PDF in long-term archiving. The syntax specifies in detail what content is allowed and what is not. These and other specifications are intended to ensure long-term readability of documents. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of that format and advantages such as full text search capabilities will lead to replacing TIFF in the near future.
